A decision by Bangladesh’s telecoms regulator to ban five operators for running VoIP services has been stayed by the country’s high court — but the government threatens to appeal the decision.
The high court has also asked the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission and the government to explain within three weeks why the decision should not be declared illegal and they should not be ordered to restore the services of the five operators.
The five public switched telephone network operators are RanksTel, Dhaka Phone, National Telecom, Peoples Tel and World Tel.
BTRC cancelled the licences of the five landline operators on May 10 2010, saying they were illegally running VoIP services and were denying the government revenue by originating illegal call termination to some foreign countries. Dhaka Phone launched a wireless local loop service throughout the country in 2009, using Huawei equipment.
The Bangladeshi government is planning to file an appeal with the Supreme Court for staying the HC order. GTB
