Hungary’s ministry of National Development is looking to relaunch a mobile licence tender this year, according to reports. An earlier attempt by the government to close an earlier tender during the financial crisis failed. This time the ministry hopes to raise around $91 million.
The money that will be raised from the proposed tender represents a major portion of the government’s overall forecasted revenues and is already part of the government’s 2010 budget.
The three existing mobile providers in Hungary are Magyar Telekom, a unit of Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone and Norway’s Telenor.
The ministry hopes that the licence will be used for broadband internet access. Existing as well as new operators will be able to bid for the frequencies. GTB
