Telefónica has rolled out a new internet-based international phone service through its O2 business in Europe. O2’s new service has launched in Germany and will be extended to its other European markets in the coming months.
The Spanish operator seeks to have new customers by offering cheaper international calls through its new service. It will use technology from Jajah, a voice over IP company that Telefónica bought in January 2010 for €145 million.
Matthew Key, chairman and CEO of Telefónica Europe, said: “In the coming months we will roll-out further Jajah-powered products across Telefónica territories to meet the growing demand for these new services.”
O2 is using Nokia Siemens Networks to supply the upgrade, which is being implemented to meet demands from smartphone subscribers and data users. Customers using the new O2 Global Friends service will be able to make international calls by dialling a local number. GTB
