China is looking to spend around $18 billion on 3G services in 2010. It will invest that amount in 3G services this year to give the sector a boost, said Zhang Feng, an official with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
At the end of June, China’s 3G mobile phone service subscribers increased by 40%, totalling 25.2 million subscribers, while the number of telephone users rose to 1.1 billion. The numbers of mobile users crossed 800 million by the end of last month.
The ministry is looking to increase the number of 3G users in China to 150 million by next year.
The nation’s three largest telecom operators are competing to add subscribers to their 3G services. Each of the three companies uses a different 3G standard, with China Mobile — the world’s largest mobile operator — promoting a locally developed technology, TD-SCDMA.
China Telecom uses the 3G version of Qualcomm’s CDMA technology and China Unicom uses WCDMA, the 3G version of the GSM family also used in much of the rest of the world. GTB
