Three telecom companies have signed up for a new undersea cable linking Nigeria and Ghana to Europe. The Nigerian units of Etisalat and MTN as well as Nigeria’s Starcomms have subscribed for the broadband services from the cable, set up by Nigerian financed MainOne Cable.
The cable has been built is partnership with the US firm, Tyco, and runs from Portugal to Nigeria and Ghana. The fibre optic cable will later connect to Morocco, the Canary Islands, Senegal and Ivory Coast.
The cable provides over 10 times the broadband capacity of Nigeria’s previous undersea cable. It will enable service providers to offer cheaper and more reliable internet access and help mobile phone operators launch enhanced services, increase speed and lower prices.
The MainOne cable has a capacity of 1.92 terabits a second. GTB
