Uzbekistan mobile operator UCell has acquired a licence for 4G LTE mobile technology.
UCell’s majority shareholder, TeliaSonera, was the first operator to launch commercial 4G LTE services for customers in Sweden and Norway in 2009. The network is being launched in 25 cities in Sweden and four in Norway during 2010.
TeliaSonera, which previously owned 74% stake in UCell, raised its stake to 94% by purchasing 20% of the shares in jointly owned TeliaSonera Uzbek Telecom from Takilant, earlier in 2010.
UCell, which had 5,074,000 customers and a market share of nearly 31% as of 2009, is the second largest mobile operator in Uzbekistan. GTB
