Motorola and Windstream get US grants

US federal authorities have started handing out grants under the broadband stimulus scheme, with $1.5bn due by the end of September

Motorola and several other companies have received millions in new broadband stimulus grants and loans from the US government. The federal government has unveiled $1.8 billion in new broadband stimulus grants and loans.
Motorola has won a $50 million award to build a new wireless-broadband network in the San Francisco area for police, firefighters and other public safety officials.
Regional operator Windstream has been granted a total of $64 million in government funding to provide more broadband service in rural areas of Georgia, Kentucky and New York. Earlier in August, it won an additional $63 million in funding from the Department of Agriculture to provide broadband service in parts of Florida, Texas, Missouri and Georgia.
Hughes Network Systems has received nearly $59 million for its satellite broadband service.
The US Commerce Department still has nearly $1 billion in funding to hand out by the end of September 2010, while the Department of Agriculture has $500 million left of its broadband funds. GTB
