Sprint Nextel has started selling its 3G-capable femtocells to qualified customers in the US.
The company is offering a new version of its femtocell, the Airave Access Point, which works on the 3G version of Qualcomm’s CDMA system, EV-DO Revision, and operates at up to 1.4 megabits a second downstream and 500 kilobits upstream.
The EV-DO Airave can be used by six people at a time over an area of 465 square metres.
Sprint and Verizon, both of which use CDMA networks, have until now been selling femtocells that operate only up to 200 kilobits.
Verizon is also planning to sell an EV-DO version of its Network Extender femtocell in the next few months.
AT&T is already selling a version of its MicroCell femtocell that supports its 3G network, which operates on GSM standards. GTB
