Telstra is launching a mobile broadband service using HSPA+ at 42 megabits a second. The Australian company has become the first mobile network operator to achieve such high peak download speeds.
The real speeds, however, are more likely to range less than half the advertised speed, from 1.1 megabits to 20 megabits. The upload speed range would be from 300 kilobits to 3 megabits.
The peak download speed increase, from 21 to 42 megabits, was made possible by a software upgrade to Telstra’s Next G network in February.
The upgrade will cover about 50% of the Australian population, with all central business districts of state capitals receiving the speed boost while another 100 regional centres, including Wollongong in New South Wales, Bendigo in Victoria and Townsville in Queensland, will get speed increases of 500 kilobits to 8 megabits.
Other operators are also seeking to launch mobile broadband services using HSPA+ at 42 megabits, but are still waiting for modems. GTB
