Telmex is planning to increase internet speeds in some parts of Mexico to as much as 20 megabits a second.
The carrier, controlled by billionaire Carol Slim, is extending fibre-optic lines closer to homes to enhance the download speeds by four times.
Telmex is testing the 20 megabits speed in three cities and has yet not completed its plan to introduce it throughout the country.
According to residential markets director, Andres Vazquez del Mercado, a major part of the Mexico City-based company’s $765 million budget goes to the internet improvements.
The company will start enhancing its top speed to 10 megabits by the end of 2010. Telmex is seeking to keep consumers from switching to cable providers such as Megacable Holdings. GTB
