Indian mobile phone operator Tata Teleservices has signed a contract with China’s Huawei Technologies to build 3G networks in five of Tata’s nine telecom areas.
The financial details of the contract were not disclosed. The move marks the end of a period in which the Indian government blocked contracts with Chinese vendors, including Huawei and ZTE.
The deal will enable the Indian operator to offer multi-media voice and data services, such as mobile streaming, video calls, mobile internet and other 3G services to its customers.
Tata Teleservices has selected Huawei’s 3G technologies under the managed services model, which includes the installation of thousands of Huawei’s LTE-ready 4G multi standard radios.
Huawei’s technology is already available in Tata DoCoMo service areas in India. Tata DoCoMo is a joint venture between Tata Teleservices and Japan’s NTT DoCoMo. GTB
