Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile USA is in discussions to carry Huawei Technologies’ new Google-powered smartphone, giving Huawei an opening into the US mobile market.
The new phone, Ideos, uses the latest version of Google’s open-source operating system, Android 2.2.
A deal for the Chinese equipment maker’s first smartphone for US consumers could be signed in four to six weeks.
Ideos, which is likely to be priced at under $100 in the US or possibly as low as $50, carries a Google logo and will allow other devices to connect to the internet through wifi.
T-Mobile USA, which had 33.6 million subscribers at the end of June 2010, has distributed Huawei products in the past. In 2009, T-Mobile offered a plug-in stick for laptops to connect to wireless internet and also sold a Huawei phone, T-Mobile Tap, which did not feature the Huawei brand. GTB
