BT is set to launch a trial scheme in which it will allow other communications providers in the UK to nominate exchanges for fibre enablement.
The pilot programme will run from September 2010 to December 2010, with alternative operators permitted to nominate up to six exchanges each for inclusion in phase seven of BT’s ongoing nationwide fibre launch.
If an exchange is considered viable for commercial deployment, the requesting operator must guarantee that 10% of premises will be using its fibre broadband within a year. If the 10% target is not reached the provider will be liable for any costs borne by Openreach, BT’s infrastructure unit, in amending its deployment plan.
If an exchange is thought to be in an area not viable for commercial deployment, the provider will be called on to fund any extra deployment charges faced by Openreach. Operators currently acquiring generic ethernet access product are eligible for the trial. GTB
