Motorola is partnering with Ericsson to develop public-safety radio equipment using LTE, the 4G mobile broadband technology. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Motorola recently announced it was selling its broadband equipment business to Nokia Siemens Networks, but the US company is keeping hold of its public-safety operations.
The deal will help Motorola create equipment that could be used to relay video wirelessly from the scene of accident. Motorola will provide its public safety-optimised LTE core and interoperability platform and rugged radios in vehicle terminals and handheld LTE data devices, while Ericsson will offer LTE access equipment and some packet core and related services.
Motorola will also provide the full spectrum of advanced services to design, implement, support, secure and manage the broadband networks. Ericsson, which has signed commercial LTE contracts with six major global operators, three of which are in the US, is expecting to hold 25% of all essential patents for LTE. GTB
