Telefónica Chile has started the deployment of its nationwide fibre-to-the-home network. Overall expenditure in the project will touch $2.5 billion over the next four years. The network is estimated to cover 700,000 households.
The first phase of the infrastructure deployment will cover Chile’s Biobío region, including the cities of Talcahuano, Los Angeles, Chillán and the region capital of Concepción. This phase is expected to connect around 50,000 households.
The FTTH network will be able to deliver speeds of between 40 and 100 megabits a second, over three times higher than those currently available on the market. It will support information, entertainment, education, health and e-government services, as well as IPTV.
Preparations are at an advanced stage for the delivery of IPTV, said Oliver Flögel, general manager of Telefónica Chile. GTB
