NEC and Fujitsu have won a deal from NTT, the Philippines Long Distance Telephone Company, StarHub and Telekom Malaysia to construct the Asia Submarine-cable Express system, a high-bandwidth optical submarine cable system that will link Japan to Singapore, Hong Kong, the Philippines and Malaysia.
The ASE, designed to be in service by June 2012, is designed for optical transmission speeds of 40 gigabits a second and will have capacity of at least 15 terabits a second. The project will cost $430 million.
The cable has the capability to be upgraded to 100 gigabits a second technology. Further links, to mainland China and other countries, may be added later.
The route is designed to avoid earthquake and typhoon-prone regions, such as the Bashi Channel south of Taiwan, while at the same time covers the shortest possible distance between Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan, in order to ensure maximum reliability and minimum latency.
StarHub COO Tan Tong Hai said: “The ASE will well equip us to handle the next level of challenges and competition where network operators will compete on speed and reliability.”
Overall project management will be carried out jointly by the NEC and Fujitsu consortium. GTB
