India’s Department of Telecommunications has issued licence termination notices to three telecom operators. Aircel, Etisalat and Sistema Shyam Teleservices — which operates under the MTS brand — have been issued the notices for delays in rollout of services in eight licence districts.
The operators have been given 60 days to say why their licences should not be terminated for failure to rollout networks.
Under the guidelines, the companies were required to offer services in 90% of their service areas in metros and 10% in district headquarters within a year from the date of award of licence.
Most new players which secured 2G licences in 2008 have not met rollout obligations. Some are facing probes by various investigative agencies, including the central bureau of investigation and parliamentary panels. GTB
