LG Uplus plans to start a Long Term Evolution service in South Korea by mid-2012, according to reports. The firm said it will start offering LTE in 82 cities around the country before end of 2011.
It added it would complete its nationwide 4G network in July 2012. LG Uplus has been facing stiff competition from SK Telecom and KT, which sell the iPhone and the iPad compatible with their 3G networks. It had lost subscribers to KT in 2010.
KT had 31.6% of the domestic mobile market in 2010, while SK Telecom had a 50.6% market share.
LG Uplus forecast the number of smartphones and tablet PCs in South Korea to reach over 40 million units by 2015.
It expects the wireless data traffic to grow 200% annually. GTB
