Global Telecoms Business has honoured Bell Labs and Australia’s Senator Stephen Conroy in the magazine’s annual Innovation Awards.
The two awards were among others presented to telecoms operators and equipment vendors from around the world at a black-tie dinner in London.

Alcatel-Lucent’s Bell Labs was honoured not only for its long history of pioneering work in the industry — including the transistor and the laser — but for lightRadio, its latest innovation in mobile communications.
“This institution that has won more Nobel Prizes than most countries, and is continuing to shake the telecommunications industry with its latest innovation,” said Alan Burkitt-Gray, editor of Global Telecoms Business, presenting the awards to Haran Sold and Florian Pivit of Bell Labs.
Telecoms minister Stephen Conroy won the award for the most significant personal contribution to telecommunications, for his work in developing what Burkitt-Gray called “the boldest, most exciting project in the delivery of fixed and mobile broadband services in the world today”, Australia’s National Broadband Network.
Conroy, now minister for broadband, communications and the digital economy, began the project while in opposition. “Now he is the politician in charge of getting it done.”
Global Telecoms Business has been presenting its annual Innovation Awards for five years.
“This year we saw more nominations, from a greater range of operators and vendors, than ever before,” said Burkitt-Gray. “We started the Awards in order to celebrate what the industry is doing, making a huge difference to the world, to all of us in business and as consumers.
“This is a sure sign the industry is working harder and harder to deliver exciting and innovative services to customers worldwide. We’ve seen a greater number of nominations for services directly aimed at businesses and consumers, designed to give them better services and make their lives easier. Congratulations to all of this year’s award winners.”

Apart from the two editor’s awards — to Bell Labs and Senator Conroy — the awards are arranged in five categories:

A: fixed infrastructure innovation
B: wireless infrastructure innovation
C: wholesale service innovation
D: business service innovation
E: consumer service innovation
