Russia’s MTS ‘plans to expand globally’

Sistema aims for 200-300 million worldwide subscribers for MTS subsidiary, says owner Vladimir Yevtushenkov

Russian firm AFK Sistema plans to take its mobile operation Mobile TeleSystems into a number of new markets as part of its strategy to become a global telecoms player, Dow Jones is reporting.
Sistema owner Vladimir Yevtushenkov told the news agency: “We have made a decision to build MTS into a global player, and this means 200 million to 300 million subscribers and several dozen countries.”
Yevtushenkov said that Sistema Shyam TeleServices, a joint venture that operates under the MTS brand in India, will be an important part of his strategy.
MTS was the largest mobile network operator by customers in Russia and the CIS at end of June 2011. The firm also operates in Armenia, Belarus, Ukraine, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. GTB
