Europe’s Carphone Warehouse to sell stake in US mobile phone venture with Best Buy for $1.6bn

Carphone Warehouse will offload its 50% interest in its US mobile phone venture with Best Buy for around $1.6 billion.
The money from the sale would probably be offered to Carphone Warehouse investors as a special dividend or something similar. CPW is being advised by Credit Suisse over its stake.
At the same time Carphone Warehouse is to close the electronic consumer goods shops it has set up in the UK under the Best Buy brand. The 11 stores, seen as a competitor to Dixons and Kesa’s Comet in the consumer market, were a joint venture between Carphone Warehouse and Best Buy. The joint venture originally planned to open 200 stores across Europe.
Carphone Warehouse will continue as a mobile phone retailer in the UK. Its telecoms division, TalkTalk, became a separate company in March 2010. GTB
