VimpelCom appoints Telenor exec as COO and deputy CEO

New appointment replaces Khaled Bichara, who steps down
Jan Edvard Thygesen will join VimpelCom on January 1 2012 as deputy CEO and chief operating officer. He was executive VP at Telenor, one of VimpelCom’s shareholders, and head of its central and eastern European operations. Khaled Bichara, president and COO of VimpelCom, will be stepping down as planned at the end of December 2011. Bjørn Magnus Kopperud will be acting head of the Telenor’s CEE region from January.
Australia’s NBN Co has hired Ralph Steffens as its first COO, reporting to CEO Mike Quigley. He was MD of service delivery at BT in the UK. BT has hired Alex Green from Virgin Media to be TV commercial and product director. He was executive director, commercial, TV and online at cable operator Virgin, where he implemented the company’s TiVo-based service. He will help to launch BT’s YouView service, due in 2012.
John Pluthero has resigned as CEO of Cable & Wireless Worldwide. He was chairman until mid-2011 when previous CEO Jim Marsh left. Gavin Darby, former CEO of Vodafone UK, takes over. CWW is not connected with Cable & Wireless Communications, from which it separated in March 2010.
Telekom Austria has appointed Stefan Amon as the new head of wholesale at its domestic subsidiary A1. He will also be responsible for the operations of the wholesale business at the group level, replacing Josef Trimmel, who has left the company. Amon, who reports to CCO Alexander Sperl, has been with Telekom Austria since 2004, most recently heading the customer service department.
Syniverse has recruited Scott Hatfield as CTO. He joins Syniverse from Capgemini, where he was VP of its cable and satellite practice. He spent almost 15 years at Cox Communications, where he served as the CEO and chief executive VP.
Orga Systems has appointed Johannes Nussbickel as CFO and MD. He has held senior finance positions in companies such as Oracle and SuSE Linux. GTB
