Malaysian mobile operator Celcom Axiata has agreed with Broadcast Australia to bid for Malaysia’s digital terrestrial television broadcasting project. According to national news agency Bernama, Datuk Seri Shazalli Ramly, CEO of Celcom, said that if Celcom wins the bid for the design, construction and long-term operations of the digital television infrastructure project, the expected investment will be $157 million. “However, it would be subjected to tender specifications,” he added.
Celcom faces competition from YTL Corporation, Telekom Malaysia and Maxis Communications for the project, for which the national authority is likely to launch a tender shortly. According to Bernama, Shazalli Ramly said that both parties would work “behind the scene” while awaiting the tender launch.
He said: “The deadline to migrate from analogue to digital is 2015. We are confident we have a strong partnership with Broadcast Australia on board, given their success record in the digitalising industry.”
Meanwhile Celcom is “preparing the business plan” for 4G after it recently received the letter of intent from the national regulator, according to Bernama. GTB
