US satellite operator DirecTV has entered the broadband wireless market through its South American offshoot Sky Brasil, using TD-LTE technology. The service will be available throughout the area of the capital city, Brasília, including surrounding regions.
Nokia Siemens Networks will be providing equipment for the service, said Nasdaq-quoted DirecTV.
Bruce Churchill, president of DirecTV Latin America, said: “By offering fast, high-quality broadband service at an affordable price, we are opening up new growth opportunities in Brazil and throughout the region. We're excited to launch this new product that will complement and enhance our industry-leading video experience.”
The new product will be available as part of Sky TV’s services with or on its own as an individual service. Sky Brasil hopes to expand the service to other cities where it has permits to operate data communication services in 2012.
The firm will provide modems free of charge and users can wirelessly connect laptops and iPads among other devices via wifi. DirecTV is exploring opportunities to offer wireless broadband services in other parts of Latin America. GTB
