Portugal’s Oni Communications builds 100 gig link to Spain with Alcatel-Lucent equipment

Alcatel-Lucent has teamed up with Portuguese operator Oni Communications to set up a 100 gigabits a second connection over its fibre-optic network linking Lisbon with the Spanish border city of Badajoz. Alcatel-Lucent was responsible for upgrading Oni’s Lisbon-Badajoz link, which was already supporting 10G channels, to 100G.
IlÃdio Cardoso, board member of Oni Communications, said: “Making the most of our existing fibre-optic networks is extremely important for us today, as it allows us to address exploding traffic growth.â€
António Beato Teixeira, head of Alcatel-Lucent Portugal, said: “Oni Communications is continually investing in new capabilities to strengthen its position in the Iberia region.
