Telstra has strengthened its Asian operations by obtaining new operating licences in Singapore and Japan. The Australian operator had recently obtained three licences to offer international long-distance telecommunications and ISP services in India.
Tarek Robbiati, group managing director for Telstra International, said that these developments will allow the operator to further realise synergies and leverage assets gained following the restructure of wholesale carrier Reach and will benefit international customers with operations in Asia.
The Singapore regulator has granted Telstra a facilities-based operator licence to own and operate telecoms infrastructure. The permit will also enable Telstra to build a local backbone required to support plans for a new submarine cable to Singapore.
Telstra has also obtained a registration type licence in Japan, which enables it to own and operate large scale telecoms circuits and facilities in cities and prefectures in the country, along with products and services delivered over those facilities and networks.
Robbiati said: “For international customers, Telstra will now have greater control over its services. In addition, Telstra will have greater control over network architecture design, and be in a strong position to optimise performance, multi-level resiliency, redundancy and reliability.” GTB
