Batelco has rolled out a next generation fibre based access network in parts in Bahrain, to ensure delivery of advanced triple-play solutions in the country. As part of the project, the operator tested broadband speeds of up to 100 megabits a second which will soon be provided in the fibre covered areas. The firm said that the network is, however, capable of providing much higher bandwidth reaching up to 2.5 gigabytes per customer.
Ahmed Al Janahi, general manager of media relations at Batelco, said: “We are successfully delivering triple play — voice, broadband and IPTV — in areas such as Riffa Views and Reef Island at the moment and we aim to add a number of new areas during 2012.”
With this network, which is based on the gigabit passive optical networks technology, Batelco hopes to deliver high bandwidth connectivity required for value added services including video on demand 3D TV and 3D gaming. GTB
