Spanish operator Telefónica has conducted DWDM channel testing for speeds of 400 gigabits a second on a live fibre network. Local Spanish media reported that the operator’s tests started on November 21 2011 and ran until December 4.
The trial took place between nodes at Granada and Jaén — 140 kilometres apart. The operator looped back traffic at the Jaén node thereby increasing the distance to 280 kilometres, according to reports.
Telefónica España intended to find out if transmitting at 400 gigabits a second is feasible for systems that already carry live traffic. The operator, however, is expected to install these links only in 2013 or later, the reports stated. GTB
