Thailand’s Total Access Communication will invest $1.26 billion to expand its 3G network up to 2014, according to Thai daily Bangkok Post. The investment will be used to buy 3G permits on the 2.1 gigahertz band in an auction that is expected to take place later in 2012.
The operator will also use the funds to upgrade its 2G network on the 850 megahertz bandwidth to 3G. According to Bangkok Post, Jon Eddy Abdullah, CEO of DTAC, said that the companies 3G customers are “less than 20% of the total subscriber base”. He added: “We’re destined to increase our investment to provide latest technologies.”
DTAC, which is majority owned by Telenor, temporarily suspended the upgrade of its 2G network to 3G after a number of network disruptions. Abdullah, however, believes that the problems will not significantly impact the operator’s market share. GTB
