Vodacom-controlled ISP AfriConnect Zambia has teamed up with broadband wireless network provider Airspan to deliver 4G broadband services to Lusaka and other cities in Zambia. Airspan will use its infrastructure to help AfriConnect provide advanced 4G connectivity in the regions.
The network, operating in the 2.5 gigahertz band, will employ Airspan’s Air4G base station. The first phase of the project will see several thousand subscriber terminals deployed in Lusaka, and new cities will be added subsequently.
Mark Bennett, managing director of AfriConnect, said: “There is a lot of new international fibre optic capacity coming into Zambia at present, and we knew we needed a means to get this additional bandwidth out to our clients.”
The companies said that this deployment will help bring affordable broadband connectivity to Zambia, which has a reputation for having slow connectivity.
Amit Ancikovsky, president of products and sales at Airspan, said: “Innovative service providers like AfriConnect are rapidly growing their businesses to expand connectivity throughout the typically underserved regions of Zambia.” GTB
