Mobile operator Bharti Airtel has launched its HSPA+ network in Zambia to provide faster mobile broadband and internet access to its customers. Indian-owned Airtel is launching the service — which it is calling 3.75G — at speeds up to 21 megabytes a second.
The company has started with 280 sites but by end of 2012, the company aims to deploy HSPA+ at up to 400 sites throughout the country.
Fayaz King, Airtel’s managing director, said: “3.75G technology will give our customers the opportunity to interact with data in a different way. This is why Airtel doesn’t see 3.75G as a product but a platform that enables the community to expand its social and commercial horizons, alongside the rest of the world.”
Bharti Airtel bought the Zambian operation, and businesses in a number of other African countries, from Zain for $10.7 billion in 2010. The operator says it plans to expand its data network across Africa with an objective to create biggest 3G network in the continent. GTB
