Israeli incumbent operator Bezeq and Alcatel-Lucent have launched a new submarine cable link between Israel and Italy. The optical fibre system, called Jonah, covers 2,300 kilometres and will help Bezeq tap the rising demands in the Israeli telecom market.
The companies’ statement said that Jonah can operate at 100 gigabits a second to enable data capacity of 7.6 terabits a second between Tel Aviv and the Italian port of Bari.
Isaac Benbenisti, CEO of Bezeq International, said: “Jonah demonstrates our ongoing commitment to the development of our communication infrastructure and sets new standards of performance and service. Alcatel-Lucent’s advanced technology offers us access to huge bandwidth at more affordable rates, while enhancing our ability to deliver a vast array of new applications and services.”
Philippe Dumont, president of Alcatel-Lucent Submarine Networks, said: “The new Jonah system will bring faster connectivity to the Mediterranean, offering the speed and capacity needed to unlock the potential to deliver innovative, IP-based services to meet the demanding requirements of subscribers in the region.” GTB
