Chinese equipment maker Xinwei Telecom Enterprise is set to be among the first providers of 4G services in Cambonia, according to Cambodian daily newspaper the Phnom Penh Post.
The paper quotes Sea Nareth, director of radio frequency licensing at Cambodia’s Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, as saying that Xinwei is awaiting approval to build communications towers in the country. He said that Xinwei will employ the Chinese-developed TD-SCDMA standard.
Xinwei is a relatively unknown vendor outside China. It has offices in Beijing, Shenzhen and Chongqing.
A statement on its website said that Xinwei will become the tenth mobile operator in Cambodia, which has a population of 14.5 million, and that it has already started testing infrastructure in the capital city, Phnom Penh. There are already 8-9 million mobile users in Cambodia, says the company. GTB
