Latvian operator Lattelecom and Germany’s Deutsche Telekom have agreed to deploy a fibre infrastructure for the Baltic telecommunications highway. The highway will enable network transmission speed of tens of gigabits a second with low latency and will link the Baltic states, Poland and Germany.
Both companies have also agreed to invest in Poland and Lithuania for the Baltic Highway. The route will provide improved internet services between western Europe and Russia through the Baltic States.
Holger Magnussen, senior vice-president of Deutsche Telekom’s International Carrier Sales & Solutions division, said: “By partnering with Lattelecom, we bring businesses in the Baltic states and beyond access to a European next generation network. The Baltic states as well as Russia have witnessed a substantial surge in demand for network connectivity, and through the Baltic Highway we will jointly provide enhanced connectivity for the region.”
Juris Gulbis, Lattelecom’s CEO and chairman of the management board, said the route would provide Russian and other operators in the region “with the geographically shortest route for data flow to Europe and the rest of the world”. GTB
