Thailand operator True will invest $48 million in order to expand its wifi network coverage in 2012, a six-fold growth from average annual spending on a yearly basis.
Non Ingkutanon, True’s general manager for broadband services, told Bangkok Post: “The expansion is needed quickly to accommodate increasing mobile data connectivity and to offload 3G and 4G data traffic to wifi networks. We plan to have 1.5 million wifi customers this year, up from 900,000 last year.”
True says it is testing the wifi 2.0 technology, which uses unused spectrum — so-called “white spaces”. It has already installed a few trial hotspots and expects to move to a commercial launch.
Non — who is a member of the board of the Wireless Broadband Alliance — said that the operator intends to increase total wifi hotspots to 100,000, and also predicts mobile users to contribute 80% of its wifi use in due course. The company predicts its total wifi revenue to grow 60% this year. GTB
