AT&T is evaluating new deals to increase its access to spectrum after the collapse of its proposed acquisition of Deutsche Telekom's T-Mobile USA, reported the Wall Street Journal, citing sources.
The newspaper said that the operator is considering transactions with Leap Wireless, Dish Network and MetroPCS, although the companies have declined to comment.
According to the report, AT&T's acquisition of Leap Wireless could provide it with access to spectrum in a number of markets. However, Leap's spectrum holdings are somewhat small and do not cover the entire US.
Dish does not intend to sell spectrum completely, since it wants to build a high-speed wireless broadband network. However, the company may decide to enter into a joint venture or network sharing agreement with AT&T or another party, said the sources. The acquisition of MetroPCS is considered less likely because the relationship between the companies has soured over the past few months.
The sources clarified that no deals were finalised yet, and it could take months before this occurred. GTB
