Russian operators Mobile TeleSystems and Rostelecom have entered into a network-sharing agreement involving joint use of communications lines, antenna towers, premises for installing equipment and property, according to local reports.
MTS spokeswoman Valeria Kuzmenko told Vedomosti that MTS will gain access to Rostelecom fibre-optic lines in some Siberian and Russian Far East regions as well as other parts of the country.
Kuzmenko also said Rostelecom was ready to enter into similar arrangements with other players. VimpelCom is already in a deal on the joint laying and rental of fibre-optic lines in return for positions on MTS and MegaFon towers. VimpelCom and Rostelecom are in talks for such lines at Sakhalin, and other possible alliances.
Shared use of Rostelecom’s 500,000 kilometre trunk network and MTS’s 117,000 kilometres of landlines is expected to help the companies save 10% on capital and operating costs, around $300 million for each, said the report. GTB
