Huawei claims it will triple smartphone sales in 2012 from 20m to 60m as it launches quad-core Android

Huawei announced its determination to become on of the world’s biggest smartphone makers, aiming to triple its annual production to 60 million in 2012. About 30-40% of Huawei’s smartphones are sold in China, Richard Yu, chairman of Huawei Device, said at Mobile World Congress.
At the front of Huawei’s plans is a new quad-core smartphone, the Ascend D quad, which the company is claiming to be the world’s fastest. It uses the company’s own processor, running at up to 1.5 gigahertz. It runs the Android 4.0 operating system.
“People are using smartphones more and more like a computer,” Yu said at MWC in Barcelona. The device is “49% faster than the next fastest smartphone”, he said. According to Yu, the new handset has a 4.5 inch screen that shows images at 330 pixels per inch.
He did not announce prices but claimed that the phone would be “15% or maybe 20%” cheaper than comparable devices from other companies. It will be launched “in the Chinese and European markets” before expanding to the US and the rest of the world. An LTE version will follow “in Q3 or Q4” of 2012, said Yu.
