Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications has cleared Softbank Mobile’s base station plan on the 900 megahertz band, following which SoftBank will launch construction of a so-called “Platinum Band” mobile network.
SoftBank expects to start services using the band on July 25 2012. The operator said the allocation would help it to improve coverage and deal with the significant traffic rise.
According to the plan, around 16,000 base stations will be installed in 2012, reaching 41,000 by 2016, providing 99.9% population coverage.
The approval has raised Softbank’s capital expenditure estimate by $1.22 billion to $13.44 billion in two years, and an additional $5.5 billion for fiscal 2013. GTB
