South Korea’s LG Uplus plans to launch voice-over-LTE service in October, according to local reports.
Choi Taek-jin, vice president of LG Uplus, told Yonhap News: “We are aiming to provide the VoLTE service starting in October after completing the nationwide LTE network by March.”
VoLTE is an initiative started by the GSM Association in 2010 to develop a worldwide standard to carry voice services over the new 4G networks.
Choi said LG Uplus is thinking of equipping all LTE-based devices with VoLTE functions — to offer users access to enhanced voice as well as data services — from 2013.
LG Uplus introduced LTE services in July 2011, in competition with other South Korean operators. LG Uplus is aiming to attract over 4 million LTE service subscribers by the end of 2012, compared with the current figure of around 1 million.
It is expected that rival companies SK Telecom and KT also intend to offer VoLTE service in 2012. GTB
