Jamaica-based mobile operator Digicel has acquired Haitian rival Voilà from US-based wireless telecommunications firm Trilogy International Partners, for an undisclosed amount. Digicel clarified that both the operators would keep running separately.
Digicel said the acquisition will provide it with a strong customer base, capable workforce, and an established presence in the Haitian market, where Voilà has had a GSM network since 1999.
Digicel said it serves more than 3.5 million customers across the country, while Voilà serves about one million customers.
Colm Delves, CEO of Digicel, said: “We are pleased to welcome Voilà customers and staff to the Digicel family. As proud Haitian companies, Digicel and Voilà share one very important thing in common: we are both deeply committed to ensuring our respective customers benefit from the best mobile experience. Digicel’s acquisition of Voilà will see mobile users across Haiti benefiting from increased investment in even better mobile services and new technology in the future.”
Digicel moved into the Haitian market in 2005, and has so far invested more than $600 million in its operations in the country.
Privately held Trilogy International also owns operators in Bolivia, the Dominican Republic and New Zealand. GTB
