Philippines operator Globe Telecom will bid for the 3G licence that is due to be surrendered by rival operator PLDT as a prerequisite for acquiring Digitel.
PLDT was allotted a 3G licence in 2005, and it purchased another in 2008, and acquired a third as part of its Digitel buy, taking its 3G spectrum to a total of 35 megahertz, said a report by ABS-CBN.
Bidding for the surrendered licence is likely to take place in July, although PLDT was seeking an extension for the submission of a progress report.
Ernest Cu, president of Globe, told ABS-CBN: “The fact that the divestment was delayed was not unexpected given the amount of PLDT’s resistance.” GTB
