Russian operators Mobile TeleSystems, VimpelCom, MegaFon and Rostelecom have agreed to install and operate an undersea fibre optic cable connecting the Russian Far East with Sakhalin island.
The new project will link the town of Okha on Sakhalin, an island just north of Japan, with the Russian mainland towns of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and Magadan. The planned capacity of the 2,000 kilometre cable is up to 8 terabits.
Andrei Dubovskov, MTS president and CEO, said: “The growth of fixed and mobile traffic in the Far East dictates the need for active development of infrastructure in the region.”
The Sakhalin-Magadan-Kamchatka project, which will start later in 2012, is valued at nearly 2.4 billion Russian rubles ($79 million). The companies plan to finish the project within two years. The cost will be divided evenly among these operators.
Dubovskov added: “The shared construction of a submarine cable between critical markets linking Sakhalin and the Far East allows telecom operators to create critical infrastructure efficiently in areas difficult to access and featuring harsh climactic conditions.” Sakhalin is 40 kilometres from the Japanese island of Hokkaido.
