QTel aims for 100% fibre access in Qatar

Qatar Telecom’s Huawei contract will see broadband penetration reaching almost all homes and businesses

Qatar Telecom has expanded its fibre-to-the-home deal with Huawei under which both parties will continue fibre broadband services deployment to cover a further 90,000 connections. This contract will see the broadband penetration reaching close to 100% of the homes and business, providing speeds of up to 100 megabits a second.
Waleed Al Sayed, Qtel Qatar’s COO, said: “It is important strategic alliance that will contribute to the growth and development of Qatar, making it one of the best-connected countries in the world. The roll-out of these additional 90,000 connections has already begun.”
This 1 billion Qatari rials ($275 million) fibre project was launched in January 2012.
Sayed added: “We have already laid fibre passing 126,000 homes, have connected 30,000 homes to the fibre network and 10,000 households are already enjoying the fibre services.” GTB
