América Móvil, TIM Participações, Vivo, Oi and Sunrise Telecomunicacoes intend to bid for the auction of 4G licences in Brazil, which is scheduled for June 12, reported Brazilian telecoms agency Anatel.
The winning bidders will have to set up 4G networks by April 2013 in cities hosting FIFA’s Confederations Cup in Brazil. The matches will be played on June 15-30 2013 in Brasilia, Belo Horizonte, Fortaleza, Rio de Janeiro, Recife and Salvador.
Anatel added that the 4G network deadline for the hosting cities for the 2014 football World Cup has been set for December 2013.
Sunrise is owned by investor George Soros. The others are existing operators in Brazil. Anatel reported that the bidders have also submitted their price proposals along with required documents for the bid.
On April 27, Anatel’s president Joao Batista Rezende said in an interview that the country could generate revenue of $1.9 billion if all the spectrum is successfully auctioned. GTB
