Africa’s Smile Telecom awards Alcatel-Lucent contract to launch LTE services in Tanzania

Alcatel-Lucent has built an LTE network for Smile Telecom in several districts of the Tanzanian capital of Dar es Salaam, using the 800 megahertz frequency band. The launch expands a limited pilot in April 2012. Smile is looking to expand the service to other areas as well.
South African company Smile Telecom already has operations in Uganda but this project is its first LTE network. The company says it plans to launch in Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Smile’s CEO is former MTN executive Irene Charnley.
Daniel Jaeger, Alcatel-Lucent’s VP for activities in Africa, said: “Our 4G LTE technology brings broadband services to many people that haven’t had access to such services in the past, helping drive economic growth in Tanzania and unlocking new revenue streams for Smile.”
The partnership will also see Smile’s core platform being integrated with Alcatel-Lucent’s network equipment operating in the 800 megahertz frequency. This move will also enable Smile’s network to support a variety of LTE devices including routers, dongles, handsets and tablets. GTB
