Russian operator Yota is to close its WiMax network this month after only six months of operation, just a month after announcing that it would expand its services in the country, according to local reports.
The May announcement followed the company’s Belarusian debut in December 2011, when it started offering a limited service.
News agency RIA Novosti quoted a Yota Belarus official as saying: “Yota will stop its services provision in Belarus on June 11.” Instead the company, owned by Scartel, “plans to focus on its business development in Russia”. Yota was originally a WiMax operator in Russia, but has been shifting its technology to LTE.
The company said nothing about the future of its operations in Nicaragua and Peru. GTB
