BT’s local loop subsidiary Openreach has unveiled its fibre-to-the-premises or FTTP range of products within its 15 exchange areas. These wholesale products for communications providers range from 2 to 30 megabits a second upstream and 40 to 330 megabits downstream.
Mike Galvin, Openreach’s MD for network investment, said: “The commercial launch of FTTP is a major milestone. Whilst we believe that FTTC [fibre to the cabinet] will provide speeds that are suitable for consumers for some time, these FTTP products will allow [communications providers] to offer [small and medium enterprises] and other bandwidth-hungry users the option of even higher speeds — some of the fastest in the world — and build propositions which help to grow the market for these higher-speed services.”
Openreach may also launch FTTP on demand in regions covered by its FTTC network from 2013, and will also try the new service with providers in eight new UK sites. GTB
