The Indian cabinet has decided to sell 2G spectrum through an auction and has set the base price, following the supreme court’s decision to cancel 122 licences awarded in 2008, reported the Economic Times citing an unnamed official.
The cabinet has decided the price at 140 billion Indian rupees — $2.5 billion — for five units of spectrum operating in the 1800 megahertz band for GSM services in all 22 telecommunication zones. Earlier, regulator TRAI set a higher base price — $3.3 billion — a level which led to the objections from the industry.
The cabinet has set the base price for 800 megahertz spectrum for CDMA services at 1.3 times the 1800 megahertz level. GTB
