AIS names new president in major shake-up

Hui Weng Cheong has been named as president of Advanced Info Service (AIS) as part of a restructuring programme at the Thai mobile operator

Hui Weng Cheong - AISIn his new role, which took effect on October 1, Cheong has been tasked with enhancing the digitisation of the business to better meet the needs of customers “in the digital age”, a company statement said. Six years earlier he was also appointed International CEO of the SingTel Group, which he joined in 1980.

He will retain his chief operating officer responsibilities of sales, marketing, network operations, IT solutions, as well as customer and services management, and will report directly to Somchai Lertsuthivong, chief executive of AIS.

There are several local media reports that allude to the move being seen as a bid by SingTel to take greater control of AIS operations. SingTel owns a 32% stake in AIS, while InTouch Holdings is the biggest shareholder with a 40.45% stake. In August SingTel confirmed that it had bought 21% of InTouch.GTB
